C afé Mae Mae in the Tribecca section of New York City was the setting for the first ever YMCA Camp Fuller reunion away from camp. Fuller has had a large contingent of campers and staff from the Park Slope, Rye and White Plains areas of New York, so the Café was an ideal location. While we had all eaten camp food (Alice Burke and spam!!!), we were glad we were treated to a fantastic NY-style brunch of bagels, mffins, fruit, tuna, egg salad, pastries, juices and hot beverages. Fifteen of us happily braved the artic cold on Sunday February 10th.
Alum Michael Warren, the Director of Catering for the new Plaza Hotel in New York City, was able to secure the small cozy Café for us.. Joining Michael at the reunion was older brother Jonathan, currently a lawyer. Their younger brother David was scheduled to attend, but he came down with the flu the night before. We missed you, David!
Ted Ressler (the Snowman), Camp's Director from 1960 - 1969 was present. He still maintains a close relationship with many of his campers and staff. His daughter Annie (Ressler) Gregson drove down from the Lake George region of New York to surprise him.
Ken White, Sherman DLB (Division Leader Boss), Senior Hill DLB and leader of our "J A P A N" cheer during Country Olympics was in attendence and took many pictures. You can see a slideshow of the photos in the gallery by clicking here . After leaving Fuller, Ken went on to a long and fulfilling career with the YMCA of the USA.
Other alumni who travelled to the Cafe were David Avedesian, Alan Levy, Debra Abbo Sapp, Greg Sutton and Tim Chezar. David was Sailing Master back in the early 70s and is brother of Haig, Ted and Anahid and son of long-time Assistant Director Avedis. Alan Levy was a camper also during the 70s and has come back to camp to help the waterfront staff with motorboat training. He services the engines both before and after camp. Deb, a lawyer and Tim a financial analyst were our most recent alumni, having attended camp in the 90s. Greg, currently working for a public TV station, was a swimmer extraordinaire back in the 70s.
Current Camp Fuller Director Peter Swain and Joe Shapiro, Chairman of the Board, drove to New York from Rhode Island to facilitate the reunion. Together they reviewed camp's enrollment and presented the Annual Report. They also reviewed the current staus of camp, including the purchase of new Vanguard sailboats and another Cape Dory sailboat. Peter also brought numerous photo albums of memorabilia assembled by Chris Rasmussen (prior Senior Program Director, brother of Scott and son of Ned and Sue, all very involved with camp).
Joe displayed his camp staff shirts going back to 1966. (He can still fit in them, although his biceps stretch the arms!) He also brought issues of the Camp Fuller Recall, the camp's yearbook, dating from 1965 to 1977. Joe and Peter also displayed the new Camp Fuller Collectible, fashioned aftrer the recently acquired bell cast by Frederic Fuller, the camp's namesake. The upcoming 2008 Alumni Reunion was also discussed. It will feature a Regatta, the dedication of the Fuller Bell, the induction of Frederic Fuller and Joe Frisella into the Legends of Camp Fuller Hall of Fame, a cookout and an encore performance of SunProd - camp's musical reviue which first took place in 1971. Is that Sugar Mountain I hear playing?
Lastly, Peter and Joe spoke about the staus of the new Boathouse Project. The architectural drawings were discussed as well as the camp's efforts to meet all the town and state building requirements. If all goes well, the plan to replace the existing Boathouse with a new structure to be built on the same footprint, but with a third level and a wrap around porch (as it once had in the past), will be approved.
Although only 15 people attended this inaugural event, we will continue this tradition and plan on welcoming a larger crowd to this mid-winter event next year. Thanks to everyone who attended. We all had a great time!
